Two High-Speed Trains Collide in Spain, Dozens Feared Dead

Two high-speed trains collided south of Madrid on Wednesday morning, killing at least 30 people and injuring an unknown number. The incident occurred between a Renfe train and another operated by Iryo, a private company.

Authorities reported that more than 500 passengers were on board the two trains at the time of the collision. The Renfe train was carrying 397 passengers, while the Iryo train had 146 passengers and one infant. Emergency services responded to the scene near the towns of Mora and Orgaz, approximately 140 kilometers (100 miles) south of the capital.

The accident took place shortly after 9:00 AM local time. Initial reports suggest that the Renfe train rear-ended the Iryo train, which was reportedly stationary at the time. The impact caused at least two carriages to derail and fall down an embankment. All train traffic on the affected line has been suspended.

While an official cause has not been determined, local media has cited human error related to signaling as a potential factor. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his shock and solidarity with the victims, stating that he was in contact with transport officials and regional authorities. Emergency services are working to assist those affected. Sánchez and other politicians have canceled public engagements, including campaign activities for upcoming parliamentary elections, in light of the tragedy. This incident marks the second high-speed rail accident in Spain this year, following a derailment in January that resulted in 46 fatalities.
