Two individuals have died and two others were injured following a suspected electrocution incident at a luxury hotel in Bengaluru, India. The deceased have been identified as a German flight crew member, Alexander Maximilian Theiss, 57, and a Slovak business manager, Juraj Horvat, 45.
The incident occurred on Saturday at the Conrad Bengaluru Hotel, a five-star establishment. Police are investigating the cause, but local media reports suggest an electric current in the pool may be to blame. Theiss's wife has reportedly filed a complaint alleging hotel negligence led to the deaths, stating both victims were electrocuted while attempting to exit the pool and subsequently drowned.
A pool attendant and lifeguard, Rahul Tiwari, 28, who attempted a rescue, and an American guest, Mathew Desantis, 41, who managed to swim to safety, were treated in hospital and are reported to be in stable condition. Horvat's wife reportedly heard screams and found her husband motionless in the water.
Lufthansa confirmed that one of its crew members died during a layover in Bengaluru. A spokesperson expressed condolences to the family of the deceased crew member.
Hotel management stated they are deeply saddened by the incident and are cooperating with the police investigation, adding that the cause has not yet been established. The hotel's pool is scheduled to be closed for maintenance from October 31 to November 30. Investigators are examining the pool's lighting and safety devices as part of their probe.
