Two people were killed and at least 11 others injured during a running of the bulls festival held on Saturday in Huamantla, Mexico. The event, a local take on Spain's San Fermín festival, saw 21 fighting bulls released into the streets as participants attempted to dodge the animals.
Juan Manuel Filomeno Herrera, 29, died after being gored in the chest and leg by a bull. Footage from the scene appeared to show Herrera attempting to evade a bull amidst live music before tripping. The animal then attacked him, with onlookers rushing to assist before he succumbed to his injuries. Another fatality, 57-year-old Luis Xolocotzi Ramirez, died from head and chest injuries sustained when he was caught by a bull.
At least 11 other individuals suffered injuries but survived the event. The festival, which has a history dating back to 1953 in Huamantla, a city known for its bullfighting traditions, has not seen fatalities in eight years prior to this weekend's events. The recent deaths have prompted public debate about the nature of the tradition, with some questioning whether it has become a reckless display of negligence.
