Two British men died after a hotel balcony railing collapsed during their holiday in Lanzarote, an inquest has heard. Darren Silcox, 56, and Nicholas Thomas, 54, both from Cwmbran, Wales, fell approximately between 15 and 22 feet (4.6m to 6.7m) when a wooden bannister gave way.

Silcox died two hours after the fall, sustaining a traumatic brain injury, skull fractures, and lacerations. Thomas was initially treated at a local hospital before being flown back to the UK for further treatment. He died nearly 10 months later, on July 10, from injuries sustained in the fall.

The incident occurred during their holiday, and the inquest into Thomas' death was opened by Gwent coroner Rose Farmer. The men were friends and their deaths have prompted an investigation into the circumstances of the balcony collapse.
