Twelve Women Killed in South Africa Amid Rising Violence

Twelve women have been killed in South Africa since July, prompting national concern and a dedicated police task team investigation. The latest victim, 23-year-old Boitumelo Gift Mashita, was shot and killed in Tembisa, Ekurhuleni, on a Monday while on her way to work. Her belongings were stolen during the attack. Police are investigating her estranged husband, who was found dead in his vehicle shortly after Mashita's murder.

While most of the discovered bodies have been found in the Ekurhuleni area, police confirmed on September 20 that another young woman, believed to be in her 20s, was found wrapped in a duvet in a dam in Soweto, located approximately 39 miles (63 km) away from Ekurhuleni. It remains unclear if this case is connected to the other killings.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has described the murders as a "stain on our national conscience." The country faces a significant homicide challenge, with 5,427 people murdered between April and June of this year alone. While official statistics do not differentiate victims by gender, the South African Human Rights Commission reported that 569 women were killed during the same three-month period, averaging six female homicides per day.

In response to the escalating violence, South African police have established a specialized task team to investigate these murders. A reward of 400,000 rand (approximately $24,000 or £18,000) has been offered for information that leads to arrests.
