Twelve people died and dozens more were injured when a Polish tourist bus carrying 57 passengers and two drivers veered off Hungary's M3 motorway early Sunday morning. The bus overturned into a ditch around 1 a.m. local time, approximately 115 miles (185 km) east of the capital, Budapest.

Authorities believe the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel, and he has been taken into custody. Firefighters rescued 35 passengers and one of the drivers from the wreckage. Emergency services worked to free individuals trapped beneath the overturned vehicle before cranes were brought in to lift the 24-tonne bus.

Hungary's ambulance service reported treating one person for life-threatening injuries, nine for serious injuries, and 37 for minor injuries. Prime Minister Péter Magyar offered his condolences to the victims' families and wished those injured a swift recovery.
