Turkey Intensifies Crackdown on LGBT Community, Citing Family Values

Turkish authorities have launched a significant crackdown on the country’s LGBT community, detaining over 100 activists and initiating investigations into more than 160 individuals across 15 provinces. The government stated these actions are part of an effort to protect Turkey’s family values.

Amnesty International reported that the sweep also resulted in the blocking or restriction of 180 social media accounts belonging to LGBT organizations, activists, journalists, and media outlets.

“This appalling escalation in Türkiye’s crackdown amounts to a full-scale assault on LGBTI rights and those who defend them,” Esther Major, Amnesty International’s Deputy Regional Director for Europe, said in a statement. “The relentless raids, arrests and demonization of LGBTI people under the spurious guise of ‘protecting the families’ demonstrates why defending LGBTI rights in Türkiye is more important than ever.”

Akın Gürlek, Turkey’s minister of justice, asserted on X that the Ministry of Justice has issued a directive to public prosecutor's offices in all 81 provinces. This directive targets content and behavior deemed contrary to “public morality” and harmful to the nation’s youth. "We are steadfastly continuing our efforts to protect the family, our children and our youth from all forms of exploitation, obscenity, crime and harmful content," Gürlek stated. "The best interests of our children are not open to debate for us. We will show no tolerance for any criminal organization targeting the institution of the family, the future of our youth, and the order of our society."

This campaign aligns with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's “Decade of Family and Population” vision, a strategy aimed at tracking demographic trends and promoting increased fertility rates. Analysts suggest Erdoğan's emphasis on "family values" and targeting of groups perceived as threats serves to solidify his political legacy.

Protests against these measures have emerged, with police reportedly using pepper spray against demonstrators in İzmir and detaining over 95 people outside the İstanbul Courthouse. The European Commission expressed concern over the recent arrests and legal proceedings, noting that Turkey, as an EU candidate and member of the Council of Europe, should uphold human rights for all individuals, irrespective of gender or sexual identity.
