Hannah Stephenson, a 31-year-old travel content creator from the UK, shared her experience of being bitten by bedbugs during a single-night stay at a Travelodge hotel in Cambridge, England. Stephenson reported waking up with itchy, bleeding red welts across her arms, legs, chest, and face, and found blood spots on her pillow and bedding.
Stephenson documented her ordeal online, posting images of her affected skin. She alleged that the hotel, located on Newmarket Road, did not adequately address her distress. The bites have caused persistent itching, disrupted sleep, and led to a panic attack, according to her account. She stated the bites have made her self-conscious and prevented her from attending social events.
Travelodge UK issued a statement expressing deep regret for Stephenson's experience. "We are deeply sorry for Ms Stephenson’s experience and how distressing an incident like this can be," a spokesperson told the BBC. The company also stated that they maintain stringent measures to prevent and manage pest issues and, when an issue is reported, affected rooms are taken out of service for inspection and treatment by independent pest control experts.
Stephenson has reportedly accepted approximately $2,700 (£2,000) in compensation from Travelodge. Despite the settlement, she expressed a desire for the company to improve its cleaning and fumigating standards.
Bedbugs are nocturnal ectoparasites that feed on blood and are commonly found in micro-environments such as cracks in furniture, mattresses, and carpets in high-traffic locations like hotels. The bites are typically painless but can cause itchy skin lesions and, in some cases, lead to more severe reactions, including secondary skin infections, regional lymphangitis, bullous lesions, and even systemic allergic responses. Psychological effects, such as sleep deprivation and anxiety, are also frequently associated with bedbug infestations.
This incident highlights a broader issue, with a Walt Disney World visitor having recently filed a lawsuit over alleged bedbug bites, and cities like Los Angeles and Chicago being identified as having significant bedbug problems in the United States.
