Travel Influencer Among Three Killed in Nicaragua River Crossing Tragedy

French travel influencer Emma Marie Laurent, 24, was among three women killed after a pickup truck carrying travelers was swept away while attempting to cross the Nahualapa River in Nicaragua. The incident occurred around 1 a.m. on Oct. 9 in El Manzano, a community in the northwestern department of Chinandega.

Heavy rainfall in the region had caused the river to rise, creating dangerous conditions. The driver, identified as Mexican national Martin Gerardo García Girón, reportedly exited the vehicle to check the water depth before proceeding with the crossing. Despite the initial assessment, the current proved too strong, sweeping the pickup truck away and causing it to overturn.

Initial reports indicate that Laurent and two other women died in the incident. Information on whether other passengers also survived the capsizing has varied. The driver of the vehicle survived the ordeal.

Nicaraguan co-president Rosario Murillo extended condolences to the victims' families and issued a warning about the perils of crossing rivers during the country's rainy season. "Rivers are deceptive; one thinks they are calm and, suddenly, the current comes, and we have tragedies like this that bring mourning to families," Murillo stated, emphasizing the need for vigilance.

Laurent had gained a significant online following by documenting her global travels on social media, often sharing insights from her van life. Her Instagram account, where she described herself as "your barefoot BFF," had nearly 43,000 followers at the time of her death. Her last social media post, shared on Oct. 2, was from a trip to Portugal, where she reflected on the importance of appreciating everyday moments and the beauty of the world around her.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal river crossing. Social media users have shared messages of remembrance and condolences for Laurent following the news of her death.
