Train Derails at London Liverpool Street Station, Causing Rush Hour Chaos
An out-of-service train collided with a buffer stop, leading to significant service disruptions.
An out-of-service London Overground train collided with a buffer stop at Liverpool Street station in London early Friday morning, causing extensive commuter disruption.
The incident occurred around 1:00 a.m. on October 15, when the Weaver line train failed to stop at the end of platform one, striking the buffer and derailing.
Video footage shared on social media showed the train impacting the buffer and coming to a halt inches from a "Welcome to London" sign. Clouds of smoke billowed from the train following the collision.
The driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital as a precaution, but has since been released. No other critical injuries were reported.
An investigation into the low-speed collision has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Rory O’Neill, TfL’s General Manager for London Overground, confirmed the details and stated that a full investigation is underway.
The crash led to more than 30 train cancellations on Friday morning, impacting Weaver line services to Chingford, Cheshunt, and Hackney Downs, which experienced severe delays. Three platforms at Liverpool Street station were closed for repairs.
Liverpool Street Station is recognized as the UK's busiest railway station, handling approximately 98 million passengers annually, according to the Office of Rail and Road.
