At least eight people were killed and 45 injured after a train struck a double-decker passenger bus on a federal highway in the town of Atlacomulco, northwest of Mexico City, authorities said.

Mexico's Civil Protection agency confirmed the casualty figures and said emergency services responded to the collision on the Atlacomulco–Maravatío Federal Highway in the industrial zone. The Red Cross, state police, the national guard and uniformed officers from the State of Mexico Prosecutor's Office were at the scene treating the wounded and beginning an investigation.

Surveillance and social media videos circulating after the crash showed a double-decker bus moving slowly across the tracks when a train struck it at its midpoint and dragged the vehicle along the rails. The footage, which could not be independently verified by Reuters, showed other cars crossing the intersection moments before the bus. In the videos there was no gate or visible signal at the crossing.

The Civil Protection agency said the bus belonged to the Herradura de Plata company. Officials reported that people on the roof of the bus were the most affected by the impact; in post-collision images the roof of the vehicle was missing and the vehicle lay beside the tracks.

Local emergency teams treated 45 people at the scene, according to the agency. The State of Mexico Prosecutor's Office said its uniformed officers were present while investigators examine the cause of the crash and the sequence of events that led to the collision.

Authorities did not immediately provide further details about the condition of those injured or the identities of the deceased. The prosecutor's office and other agencies have not yet released a formal timeline or preliminary findings from the on-site investigation.

The collision occurred in an area used by industrial traffic as well as public buses and private vehicles. Federal and state officials will determine whether signals, gates or other safety measures were in place at the crossing and whether any operational or human factors contributed to the accident.

The national guard and local police units remained at the scene into the evening to secure the area, coordinate medical evacuations and assist investigators. State authorities said they would provide further information as it becomes available.
