Tornado Kills 4 Workers at Construction Site in Turkey

A tornado tore through a construction site in Turkey's Mediterranean coastal province of Antalya on Tuesday, killing four workers and injuring another.

The storm destroyed a container that housed workers, while a fifth worker who was in a separate container sustained injuries. The injured worker's condition was not immediately known. Three of the deceased were identified as Syrian nationals.

The tornado hit the building site in Antalya's Kepez district shortly after the country's weather agency issued a warning for heavy rains. The powerful storm also toppled a crane at the site.

While tornadoes occasionally occur in Antalya and along the Mediterranean coast, fatal incidents are rare. This event follows recent severe floods in Istanbul that resulted in eight deaths earlier in the month. Kepez and the wider Antalya region, which is scheduled to host the U.N. climate summit COP31 next month, did not experience damage from the tornado.
