Top South African Police Official Faces Sexual Offense Charges

One of South Africa's highest-ranking police officers, Lt Gen Shadrack Sibiya, has been charged with sexual offenses and faces potential additional arrests related to trafficking allegations. Sibiya, the suspended deputy police commissioner, appeared briefly in court north-west of Johannesburg on charges that he allegedly sexually groomed a 16-year-old girl and raped an 18-year-old woman.
The 59-year-old officer was detained on Monday. He has made no public comment regarding the charges. His next court appearance is scheduled for September 29, when he is expected to apply for bail. Prosecutors have indicated they will oppose the bail application.
In light of potential escape plans, state prosecutors have also requested that Sibiya be held in a different prison facility while awaiting trial. These developments occur as the South African police service is under scrutiny at a major public inquiry investigating allegations of corruption and collusion with criminals.
This inquiry, known as the Madlanga Commission, commenced last September. During its proceedings, accusations surfaced that Sibiya received 20 impalas from an alleged criminal kingpin in exchange for a police contract. Sibiya has denied this specific allegation.
