A three-year-old girl drowned in a swimming pool while on a family holiday in Majorca, an inquest has heard. Eleri Ellesmere was discovered unresponsive in the water at a private villa near Pollensa on the evening of June 24.
The toddler was transported by ambulance to the Hospital Universitari Son Espases in Palma, approximately 44 miles away. She died in the hospital the following day.
The inquest opening on Monday revealed that Eleri and her family, from New Tredegar in Caerphilly county, were staying at a rented villa with a private pool. The villa is located less than five miles from Pollensa, a popular area among British families for its beaches.
Family members and paramedics attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) before Eleri was taken to the hospital. Her body was flown back to the UK and has been formally identified.
Coroner Rose Farmer stated that the cause of death was mechanical asphyxiation by drowning and respiratory failure. A full inquest is scheduled for April 13, 2027.
Eleri's family described her as deeply loved and said her parents are facing "the most devastating chapter a mother, father and surrounding family can experience." An online fundraiser has been established by a family member to help cover funeral costs and provide financial support for Eleri's parents. The fund has so far raised over £7,000 towards its £10,000 goal.
