Three Teenagers Die After Car Plunges into River Wear
A survivor, also a teenager, was arrested in connection with the incident.
Three teenagers have died after a car entered the River Wear in Sunderland, England, authorities reported.
Northumbria Police stated that a black Audi A3 left the road shortly before 1:30 p.m. BST near Wearmouth Bridge and entered the water. Four individuals were inside the vehicle at the time.
A 17-year-old boy managed to escape the car and reach safety. He has been hospitalized with non-serious injuries and subsequently arrested in connection with the incident, according to the police.
Emergency services recovered the bodies of two teenage boys and one teenage girl from the river. Police confirmed that no other vehicles are believed to have been involved in the incident.
Ch Supt Scott Cowie, area commander for Sunderland, described the event as a "truly tragic incident" and conveyed condolences to the families and friends of the victims. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is in its early stages.
