Police in Monaco were searching for a suspect Monday evening after a makeshift bomb exploded, injuring three people. The blast occurred shortly before 9 p.m. in a residential area.
French media reported that surveillance footage appeared to show a man dropping a backpack at the entrance of a building just before the explosion. BFM TV, citing the principality’s prosecutor general, described the device as a “parcel bomb.”
Eric Ciotti, the right-wing mayor of Nice, France, which borders Monaco, called the incident a tragedy for the principality.
