Three people, including a 19-year-old woman, died from suffocation following celebrations in Mexico City after the country's 2-0 World Cup victory over Ecuador. The capital's health authority confirmed the deaths on Wednesday.

A 48-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man also died in the incident. The city government reported that more than one million people took to the streets, primarily around the Angel of Independence monument, to celebrate Mexico's first World Cup knockout win since 1986.

Clara Brugada Molina, head of the city's government, extended condolences to the victims' families and pledged support. "After performing first aid and CPR techniques on the patients, they were transferred to a hospital for specialised medical care," the city's health authority stated. The victims have been identified by their families.
