Three Dead in 'Airport Malaria' Outbreak in Germany Following Mosquito on Flight
Officials are investigating a rare cluster of malaria cases linked to an infected mosquito believed to have been transported on an international flight to Frankfurt.
Three individuals have died from malaria in Germany following the discovery of an infected mosquito at Frankfurt Airport, an incident officials are terming "airport malaria." The outbreak has raised concerns about the potential for the tropical disease to spread in areas where it is not endemic.
The victims, including an airport worker and two residents from the Schwanheim area near the airport, contracted the disease without having traveled to malaria-endemic regions. The first case was reported in early July, with subsequent infections identified among airport employees. In total, six airport employees were diagnosed with malaria, according to Fraport, the company operating Frankfurt Airport.
"Airport malaria" occurs when a mosquito carrying the malaria parasite becomes trapped on an aircraft or within luggage. Upon arrival in a malaria-free region, the mosquito can then bite local residents, transmitting the infection. Malaria is caused by the parasite Plasmodium falciparum and cannot be spread from person to person.
In response to the outbreak, airport officials implemented mosquito traps around the property in July in an effort to contain the spread. The Robert Koch Institute, Germany's agency for disease control and public health, is involved in the investigation and has provided information to employees, advising them to seek medical attention if they experience any symptoms.
While the exact departure point of the flight carrying the infected mosquito remains unclear, the incident highlights the risks associated with international travel and the transport of disease vectors.
