The security arrangements for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in the United Kingdom could be affected by the ongoing child pornography investigation into Meghan's estranged father, Thomas Markle Sr. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been seeking armed police protection from RAVEC, the committee responsible for royal security in the UK.

According to Simon Morgan, a former Met Police Bodyguard to the British Royal Family, RAVEC would consider whether the allegations against Markle Sr. could create a credible threat to his daughter and her husband. "The question would be, will someone target Meghan Markle because her father is being accused of being a pedophile?" Morgan told Page Six.

RAVEC's decision-making process involves assessing various intelligence sources, including social media chatter, dark web activity, negative correspondence received by the Sussexes, and public perception of the allegations. The committee would then determine if these factors escalate the threat and risk picture to Prince Harry and Meghan, potentially necessitating enhanced security measures.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle lost their automatic, taxpayer-funded police protection in the UK when they stepped down as senior royals in 2020. They have since been petitioning to regain this security, particularly when visiting Britain with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. Harry lost a legal appeal in May 2025, with a court upholding the government's decision to assess security needs on a case-by-case basis for his visits.

Following their return to the UK in August, the couple renewed their efforts for armed protection, prompting RAVEC to initiate new risk assessments. The recent resurfacing of allegations against Thomas Markle Sr. adds a new layer to this ongoing security review.

Meghan's half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., claimed to have discovered child sexual abuse images and videos among their father's belongings in the Philippines. Local authorities confirmed an investigation is underway, though Thomas Markle Sr. has denied the claims, labeling them "sick lies." Meghan Markle released a statement acknowledging she had been aware of the "deeply distressing" accusations for years.

Philippine authorities recently stated they are working with US law enforcement but have not communicated with UK authorities regarding the investigation. They indicated that a case would be filed if sufficient evidence is found.
