Thameslink is set to replace more than 60,000 train seats, commonly described as "ironing boards," with more comfortable alternatives over the next year. The initiative will involve replacing seat base cushions and improving backrests on thousands of standard class seats across 115 trains. First-class seats will see their base cushions upgraded gradually over the next two years, while their backrest design will remain unchanged.

In addition to seating improvements, 70 Thameslink trains that currently lack them will be fitted with seat back tables. The Department for Transport (DfT) confirmed these upgrades are part of a broader effort to enhance passenger experience on the network.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander highlighted the changes as a demonstration of public ownership. "Less than 100 days since GTR transferred into public control, we're delivering on the improvements commuters have been asking for," Alexander stated. She added that the replacement of the "dreaded ironing board seats" is intended to provide passengers with "comfier, more pleasant journeys."

Greater Thameslink Railway (GTR), which operates Thameslink, was brought into public ownership at the end of May. GTR Chief Executive John Whitehurst noted that customer feedback regarding comfort has been a key driver for the seating improvements. "Through customer research with everyday commuters, we've gathered valuable insight to help us shape the best possible solution for cushion comfort onboard our high-capacity trains," Whitehurst said.

Thameslink operates crucial commuter routes through central London and serves major stations including London St Pancras, Brighton, Cambridge, and Sevenoaks. The DfT has indicated that these upgrades are the beginning of efforts to modernize the railway system, which also includes a fare freeze for the first time in 30 years and the addition of 76,000 extra seats to the network by publicly owned operators. The long-term vision includes the establishment of Great British Railways, focused on delivering reliable and modern services with passenger experience at its core.
