Thailand Braces for More Rain as Flood Death Toll Reaches 31

Thai authorities have issued warnings of additional rainfall and flash flooding, as the death toll from persistent floods since mid-September has climbed to 31.

Forecasters predict thunderstorms, strong winds, and heavy rain across much of northern Thailand from Monday through Wednesday. These conditions are expected to heighten the risk of flash flooding, particularly in low-lying areas. Some central, eastern, and southern regions, including the capital Bangkok, are also anticipated to experience very heavy to heavy rainfall over the weekend.

Last week, numerous areas in Bangkok experienced inundation following several days of torrential rain, which led to thousands of evacuations and significant disruptions. While the situation in the capital has largely improved, floodwaters persist in some lower-lying districts.

To mitigate further flooding, Bangkok authorities are implementing measures such as draining water from the city's main canals to increase their capacity and deploying additional water pumps in high-risk zones.

As of Monday, more than 3.5 million people remained affected by floods nationwide, according to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation. The 31 fatalities were reported across eight provinces, with four occurring in Bangkok. In response to the widespread damage, the Thai government recently approved emergency funds exceeding 4.1 billion baht (approximately $122 million) for flood recovery efforts.
