Tenth Woman's Body Found in South Africa Suburb Amidst Serial Killer Probe

Police in South Africa have discovered the body of a tenth woman in a Johannesburg suburb, intensifying concerns of a serial killer targeting females in the region. The latest discovery was made on Saturday morning in the Tembisa neighborhood, located northeast of central Johannesburg.

A friend of the victim identified her after being shown a photograph of the body, recognizing her clothing from the previous evening. The friend expressed her grief, stating, "I don't know what I'm going to say to her children. It's painful."

The Gauteng Police Commissioner, Tommy Mthombeni, indicated that while it is too early to definitively link this death to the others, similarities in the victims and the circumstances of their deaths are being examined. "For now, it's not something which we can overrule to say there's a serial killer, but we cannot conclusively indicate as such," Mthombeni stated.

Since July, ten bodies have been found in the Ekurhuleni area and Soweto, many of them young women who had suffered extreme violence. Most of these bodies were discovered in Kempton Park, a neighborhood adjacent to Tembisa. The scale of violence against women in South Africa, which has one of the highest rates of gender-based violence globally, has drawn national outrage.

South Africa experiences a high homicide rate, with 5,427 individuals murdered between April and June this year alone. The recent string of killings around Johannesburg has deeply unsettled many women.

The situation has placed renewed pressure on the national government, which declared gender-based violence a national disaster less than a year ago. While official police statistics do not always differentiate victims by gender, the South African Human Rights Commission reported that 569 women were killed and 1,052 survived attempted murders in the April to June period.

In connection with one of the nine previous murders, three men appeared in court earlier this week. Police are continuing efforts to apprehend other individuals who may be involved in these crimes.
