Ten Lions Found Dead in Tanzania National Park, Poison Suspected
Authorities are investigating the deaths of ten lions discovered in the Ndutu area of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Ten lions have been found dead in Tanzania's Ngorongoro Conservation Area, with authorities suspecting poisoning as the preliminary cause. The lions were discovered on Friday in the Ndutu section of the park, a protected area and UNESCO World Heritage site.
"Preliminary findings suggest the animals may have died after ingesting poison," the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority said in a statement. An investigation is underway to determine the definitive cause of the deaths.
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is home to diverse wildlife, including lions, elephants, and black rhinos, and is also inhabited by the semi-nomadic Maasai pastoralists. The International Union for Conservation of Nature classifies lions as vulnerable, with declining populations threatened by habitat loss, dwindling prey, and human-wildlife conflict.
