Teenager Loses Hand During French Student Protests

A 15-year-old boy lost a hand and part of his lower arm when a police dispersal grenade detonated during student protests in Lens, France. The incident occurred as the wave of nationwide school demonstrations entered its third week, according to reports.

Officials stated that approximately 200 to 250 protesters were throwing objects at police when the teenager picked up the grenade. The protests, which began in the Paris region, have spread across the country, with students demanding more resources, better learning conditions, and an end to teacher shortages.

Education Minister Edouard Geffray noted a decline in protest activity in recent days and announced plans for a government platform for students to voice their concerns. The incident involving the teen took place just before a national demonstration organized by a student union.

Government officials have described the protests as evolving into violence, with some schools being ransacked. Since the demonstrations began, more than 5,000 people have been arrested, with 87% of those being minors. The Justice Ministry reported that over 1,800 individuals are facing prosecution, including 1,483 minors.

The protests are occurring months before an election to replace President Emmanuel Macron. Student demonstrators have expressed their determination to continue protesting until their demands are met.
