A 13-year-old boy died and two other young people sustained injuries when a fountain partially collapsed during World Cup victory celebrations in Salamanca, Spain. The incident occurred in Ciudad Rodrigo around 00:30 local time (23:30 BST) on Sunday, shortly after Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in the World Cup final.
The structure of the Árbol Gordo fountain reportedly gave way after several individuals climbed on it to celebrate Spain's second-ever World Cup win. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene, including a mobile intensive care unit and a basic life support ambulance. The injured were attended to, with one child requiring hospitalization for a possible broken leg.
The town hall of Ciudad Rodrigo acknowledged the tragedy, stating, "What was supposed to be a celebration for the victory in the Spanish National Football Team's World Cup has turned into a tragedy." Local police and the Civil Guard were notified, and an investigation into the boy's death was initiated at the local health center. Psychological support was also requested for the boy's family.
This event follows other incidents during World Cup celebrations earlier in the month, which reportedly resulted in three deaths from suffocation in Mexico City and one death from an epileptic crisis in another location.
