A 16-year-old male defendant, whose identity is protected due to his age, has been formally charged with the murder of a 61-year-old man and the attempted murder of two other individuals. The charges stem from an incident that occurred on Saturday morning at a residence on Lisnahull Road in Dungannon.
The deceased man was discovered at the property alongside his eight-year-old daughter, who sustained injuries. The man's 48-year-old wife also suffered non-life-threatening injuries during the attack. The 16-year-old defendant faces additional charges, including making threats to kill.
The teenager appeared before a court in Omagh on Tuesday morning and was remanded into custody. During the brief hearing, the defendant confirmed his name, date of birth, and address. He spoke only to provide these details.
BBC News NI has learned that the man who died had resided in Northern Ireland for over two decades and was originally from Guinea-Bissau. The court was informed by the defense solicitor, Jarlath Faloon, of significant concerns regarding the defendant's mental health. Faloon stated that the defendant had been evaluated by a mental health nurse over the weekend, though not at a psychiatric level.
District Judge Conor Heaney ordered a mental health assessment for the defendant. He is scheduled to appear next at Dungannon Youth Court on September 15.
