The Sydney Harbour Tunnel experienced a complete closure in both directions on Wednesday due to a car fire. The incident, which began shortly after 8 a.m., led to substantial traffic congestion on the Gore Hill Freeway past Artarmon and increased delays on the M1.
Automatic sprinklers within the tunnel were activated when the fire broke out. Emergency services responded promptly, with at least 12 firefighters and three trucks dispatched to the scene to extinguish the blaze. Paramedics were also present to assess individuals for smoke inhalation.
Traffic queues for the tunnel extended beyond Mosman, prompting Transport for NSW to advise motorists to seek alternative routes, plan their journeys in advance, and allow for additional travel time. Light vehicles were directed to use the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Cahill Expressway, while heavy vehicles were required to find separate diversions.
