Sydney FC's active supporter group, The Cove, will return to Allianz Stadium for Friday night's match against the Central Coast Mariners, marking their first attendance since October. The group had threatened a boycott following allegations that police assaulted a teenage fan and forcibly removed and handcuffed several supporter leaders during the October 16 derby against the Western Sydney Wanderers.

The dispute centered on The Cove's claims of 'worst policing standards' during the derby, where they alleged a 17-year-old was slammed into rails and struck, and that two chant leaders were ejected. The group also stated that five of its leaders were handcuffed, pressed against walls, and ejected without being charged, with officers allegedly telling them, "We have nothing to legally charge you with, move on."

The Cove accused police of bypassing established arrangements for supporter marshals and of antagonizing fans. The group had challenged Sydney FC, the A-League Men, and stadium officials to intervene, stating, "Active support isn't a crime. Back your f*cking fans."

Following discussions involving Sydney FC, Venues NSW, and NSW Police, a joint statement released on November 5 indicated a commitment to improved communication, mutual respect, and clearer matchday processes. The statement acknowledged the importance of active support and committed to ensuring a safe matchday experience for all.

While the statement welcomed fans back and thanked The Cove's leadership for their engagement, it did not detail findings on the specific derby incidents or outline changes to police operations. The Cove expressed hope that future policing would reflect the efforts made by the club and its leadership and stated they would be monitoring progress.

The Football Supporters Association Australia (FSAA) has also become involved, suggesting that similar concerns about excessive police and security actions are shared by supporters elsewhere in Australia and New Zealand. The FSAA has called for structural changes beyond reactive reviews and discussions, advocating for a framework involving senior league management, clubs, fan leaders, stadium operators, security, and police commands.
