Nurhayati Pamungkas, the wife of a Sydney chef, has died after being struck by a car while picking up her two children from school. Ms. Pamungkas was crossing the road in Lakemba on July 28 when she and another pedestrian were hit by a Toyota Tarago.
She sustained critical head injuries and was taken to Liverpool Hospital, where she was placed in an induced coma. On Tuesday, Dicks Hotel Balmain, where her husband Agung is a chef, confirmed her death in a statement.
"We are heartbroken to share that Nurhayati has sadly passed away," the hotel said. "Agung, our head chef, and their two children were by her side, but her injuries were just too severe."
Agung's employer, Dicks Hotel owner Elia Economou, had previously set up a GoFundMe to support the family. The fundraiser stated that Ms. Pamungkas was "doing what most parents do every day... heading to pick up her two young kids from school. She never made it." As of Tuesday, the campaign had raised over $50,000.
Another pedestrian, a man in his 60s, was critically injured in the same incident and was taken to St George Hospital. Three other pedestrians who were crossing at the time were not injured.
Witnesses told Seven News that the Toyota allegedly ran a red light before hitting the pedestrians and then colliding with two vehicles stopped at the lights on the other side of the road. The driver, an 82-year-old man, was taken to the hospital for assessment and testing.
New South Wales Police have stated that their inquiries into the crash are ongoing, and no charges have been laid as of Tuesday afternoon. Police are asking for anyone with information or dashcam footage to come forward.
