Sydney Airport Faces Disruptions as Nearly 1,000 Workers Strike
Security and ground staff strikes are expected to cause delays at Sydney Airport and potentially other Australian airports.
Sydney Airport is bracing for significant travel disruptions on Thursday as approximately 1,000 workers prepare to participate in separate strikes. The industrial action involves up to 400 security personnel and around 500 Qantas Ground Services staff.
Security workers from Certis are scheduled to hold a two-hour work stoppage starting at 7:30 a.m., with a second stoppage planned for 6 p.m. These workers voted overwhelmingly in favor of industrial action. Additionally, Qantas and Australian airExpress employees are expected to be on strike from Thursday morning through Friday.
The Transport Workers' Union, representing the affected workers, is advocating for improved wages, greater job security through full-time employment, and changes to how aviation work is distributed among different companies. The strikes are anticipated to impact airport operations beyond Sydney, potentially affecting services in Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth.
A Qantas spokesperson stated that the industrial action is not expected to disrupt domestic or international passenger services. The airline has implemented contingency plans to mitigate any potential impact on its operations, and QantasLink customers are not anticipated to experience disruptions.
