Suspect Detained After Fire at Hitler's Eagle's Nest Retreat

Police in the German state of Bavaria have detained a suspect after a fire broke out at Adolf Hitler's former mountain retreat, the Kehlsteinhaus, also known as the Eagle's Nest. The alarm was raised at approximately 9:15 PM local time on Friday, and firefighters arrived to find the building engulfed in flames.

Difficult terrain hampered efforts to extinguish the fire, which continued to burn into Saturday morning. Approximately 200 emergency personnel were deployed to the scene. No injuries have been reported.

A criminal investigation is underway to determine the suspect's connection to the incident.

The Kehlsteinhaus, located above the town of Berchtesgaden, served as a part-time seat of government for the Nazi dictator. Hitler met commanders at the retreat to plan the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. The site was also used for propaganda films that depicted Hitler as a lover of nature and animals.
