Sudan Gold Mine Collapse Kills at Least 67
A collapse at a gold mine in Sudan's West Kordofan province has resulted in at least 67 fatalities, with search and rescue operations ongoing.
At least 67 people have died following a gold mine collapse in a remote area of Sudan, according to a medical group and survivors.
The incident occurred at the al-Zara gold mine in the town of Nuhud, located in West Kordofan province, an area under the control of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces amidst the country's ongoing conflict with the military. Survivors reported that the collapse happened late Tuesday, and many individuals are still unaccounted for.
The death toll is expected to rise as search efforts continue for survivors or those trapped beneath the rubble. Miners on the scene indicated that the mine, which comprises several shafts, had people trapped inside.
One survivor described the collapse as "massive" and noted a lack of readily available heavy machinery to clear the debris. Mine collapses are a recurring issue in Sudan, a significant gold producer, often attributed to inadequate safety standards. Previous incidents include a 2023 collapse that killed 14 miners and another in 2021 which claimed the lives of 38 workers.
