Student Gunman Wounds Eight in Turkish School Shooting
Attack occurs in Manisa province, leading to immediate apprehension of the suspect.
A student opened fire in front of their high school in the western Turkish province of Manisa on Tuesday, wounding at least eight people, including other pupils.
Two of the wounded were reported to be in critical condition, according to local media. Footage posted online showed a young figure walking on a street near the school with a rifle before turning back towards the building. Ambulances were dispatched to the scene.
The assailant was apprehended shortly after the incident, the governor's office announced. "A report was received regarding gunfire in the vicinity of the Inci Uzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in our Turgutlu district at 07:59 [4:59 a.m. UK time]," the office stated on X. "Upon the report, a large number of police and medical teams were dispatched to the scene."
Initial findings indicated that eight individuals were affected, and the injured have been transported to the nearest medical facilities. "Following the incident, the suspect individual believed to have fired the weapon has been apprehended and taken into custody by our security forces," the governor's office added. A judicial and administrative investigation has been launched.
The motive for the attack remains unclear. The incident follows two deadly school shootings in April that led to increased security measures and tighter gun controls for the 2026-2027 academic year. Prior to those events, Turkey had not experienced such attacks.
In April, a 19-year-old former student fatally shot himself after injuring 16 people at the Ahmet Koyuncu Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in Siverek, Şanlıurfa Province. Just over 24 hours later, a 13-year-old killed 12 people and injured 13 more at the Ayser Çalık Secondary School in Kahramanmaraş Province before dying from a self-inflicted knife wound while attempting to flee. That shooting was the deadliest of its kind in Turkey's history. Shots were also fired outside a school in Gaziantep on the same day as the Kahramanmaraş incident, but no casualties were reported.
