More than 15,000 homes are without power as Storm Austen continues to batter southern England and Wales, with more bad weather anticipated this weekend.
The storm, the first named of the season, brought gusts of up to 84 mph (135 km/h) to Jersey. In southern England, the severe weather disrupted travel, causing fallen trees to block railway lines and roads.
In Brighton, a section of the West Pier, an abandoned structure that first opened in 1866, collapsed into the sea.
Forecasters expect Storm Boelo to bring further strong winds and heavy rain on Saturday. The Met Office has issued an amber warning for wind covering parts of Scotland, northern England, and Northern Ireland for Saturday and Sunday.
