Doctors in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka, have removed a 3.1-kilogram (6.8-pound) bladder stone from a 55-year-old patient, a feat they believe sets a new world record.

The stone, comparable in weight to a full-term baby and roughly the size of an ostrich egg, was discovered while the patient was being treated for a stroke. Medical staff noted his difficulty urinating, prompting an investigation that revealed the large stone in his urinary bladder.

Dr. Prahalahan Balakrishnan, who led the surgical team, stated that according to available records, this is the largest bladder stone ever documented and surgically removed. The patient's condition is reported as very good following the procedure.

Doctors estimate the stone had been growing in the patient's bladder for approximately five to 10 years. The patient remains hospitalized to continue receiving treatment for his other medical conditions.
