South Korea is grappling with an intense heatwave that has resulted in the country's highest recorded temperature since modern record-keeping began. On Sunday, the southern city of Yangsan registered a searing 42.5 degrees Celsius (108.5 degrees Fahrenheit).

Authorities report that at least 19 people have died due to the extreme heat. Seoul, the capital, is currently under a severe heat warning, a designation issued for the first time under a new government system established this year to address rising temperatures.

The extreme weather event has placed significant strain on the nation, prompting widespread concern and emergency responses.
