South Africa Police Launch Manhunt After 17 Killed in Tavern Shooting
Authorities are searching for suspects armed with rifles and pistols who opened fire on patrons in Wedela township.
South African police have launched a manhunt after 17 people were killed and 15 wounded in a shooting at a tavern in Wedela township, southwest of Johannesburg. The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday in Gauteng province.
Emergency medical services confirmed that 13 men and 4 women were dead at the scene. The motive for the shooting remains unknown, according to a statement from the South African Police Service.
Police reported that the suspects were allegedly armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols. The suspects reportedly targeted the tavern, firing on customers who were outside before moving inside to continue the shooting.
Fifteen other victims sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to medical facilities. No arrests have been made as of Sunday.
