Shark Attack Suspected Off Australian Beach

Emergency services responded to a suspected fatal shark attack off a Western Australian city beach on Friday. Police and wildlife officers were investigating the incident at Sorrento Beach in Perth's northern suburbs after witnesses reported seeing blood in the water.

Authorities closed the beach to swimmers following the incident. A police boat and helicopter were dispatched to the scene.

This incident follows a shark attack on Monday near Geraldton, approximately 250 miles north of Perth, where a surfer sustained a serious leg wound. This year has seen four confirmed fatal shark attacks in Australia.

In May and June, three spearfishing divers were killed by sharks off the Australian coast within a four-week period. Earlier in the year, a 12-year-old boy died after being mauled by a bull shark in Sydney Harbor in January.

On average, Australia has experienced between two and three fatal shark attacks annually since 2000, according to data from the Australian Shark Incident Database.
