Seoul Neighborhood Tops List of World's Coolest Districts for 2026

Jongno 3-ga in Seoul has been named the coolest neighborhood in the world for 2026 by experts at Time Out, topping a list that features 40 diverse urban areas globally.

The annual ranking, which aims to identify trendier, less-trafficked parts of cities, encompasses a range of neighborhoods celebrated for their local flavor, culinary offerings, and cultural vibrancy.

Seoul's Jongno 3-ga is described as a dynamic area blending cafes, bars, traditional Korean houses known as hanoks, and late-night food stalls. It also features Seosulla-gil, an area known for its jewelry stores and independent boutiques.

Securing the second position is the L’Ocean District in Rabat, Morocco's capital. This coastal neighborhood offers a mix of modern beachside ambiance with palm trees and ocean views, alongside the historic charm of its nearby medina and Kasbah. The area is noted for its abundant dining options and The English Bookshop.

Athens' Neos Kosmos ranks third, noted for its transformation from a blue-collar community into a hub of art and culture with independent businesses, new restaurants, contemporary exhibition spaces, and a theater. It also hosts an annual neighborhood block party in October.

In the United States, Los Angeles' Chinatown is recognized in fourth place. Beyond its culinary attractions, which include Chinese, Italian, and other cuisines, the neighborhood is noted for its bars and vibrant Lunar New Year celebrations.

The highest-ranking UK neighborhood on the list is Govanhill in Glasgow, which comes in at fifth place. It is celebrated for its delis, curry houses, cafes, and traditional pubs, as well as cultural venues like the Tramway theatre and Hampden Park.

Other notable neighborhoods include Kitakagaya in Osaka, Japan, a former shipbuilding area now filled with galleries and street art; Chapinero Alto in Bogotá, Colombia, known for its bohemian atmosphere and vibrant nightlife; and Koenji in Tokyo, Japan, a hub for vintage shops and historic temples.

Canadian entries include Downtown St. Catharines, recognized for its local art, vintage shops, and proximity to wineries. Rome's Esquilino neighborhood, located near the main train station, is highlighted for its budget-friendly accommodations, traditional restaurants, and diverse market.

Valencia's Russafa district is noted for its creative atmosphere, colorful buildings, and lively terraces. Ho Chi Minh City's Tân Định neighborhood is recognized partly for its distinctive pink church, as well as its market and local eateries.

Delhi's Humayunpur is highlighted as an underrated spot with numerous dining options and a student hub atmosphere, featuring tattoo studios and K-pop shops. Rio de Janeiro's Laranjeiras, one of the city's oldest neighborhoods, offers a strong community feel with local food and crafts.
