Maj-Gen Feroz Khan, a senior official in South Africa's crime intelligence division, survived an assassination attempt Sunday evening in Johannesburg. Khan was shot while driving home and was subsequently taken to a hospital for emergency surgery, according to local media reports.

The incident occurred just days before Khan was scheduled to appear before a public inquiry investigating allegations of criminality within the South African police force. Police spokesperson Brig. Athlenda Mathe confirmed that an investigation into the shooting is underway. Mathe stated that it would be premature and irresponsible to speculate on any potential motives or to link the attack directly to Khan's upcoming testimony at this stage.

The inquiry, known as the Madlanga commission, was established following claims made last July by senior police officer Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who alleged that organized crime groups had infiltrated the government.
