A Nubian giraffe was sedated and carefully moved to a new wildlife reserve in Uganda as part of a conservation effort. Rangers and veterinarians from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) undertook the operation on Wednesday, translocating the towering animal from Murchison Falls National Park to Ajai Wildlife Reserve, located near Arua in northwestern Uganda.
Moving giraffes presents significant challenges due to their height and physiology. In this operation, the giraffe was sedated, gently lowered to the ground, and had its eyes and ears covered with a cloth. Veterinarians continuously monitored the animal before it was loaded onto a specially designed transport truck.
Dr. Patrick Atimnedi, UWA's assistant commissioner for veterinary services, led the operation. The plan is to translocate a total of 12 Nubian giraffes to Ajai Wildlife Reserve. According to Atimnedi, the goal is to expand the range of these critically endangered giraffes and diversify the species within Ajai Wildlife Reserve.
