A security guard, Hernán Gil, has been rescued alive eight days after being trapped in the rubble of a building that collapsed following twin earthquakes in Venezuela. Emergency workers managed to free Gil on Thursday, more than 100 hours after locating him under 140 tonnes of debris.
Gil, 43, was found on Saturday by rescue teams who had been working against the clock to reach him. The rescue effort involved hundreds of personnel from multiple countries, including Venezuela, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Mexico, Portugal, and the United States.
The earthquakes, which struck Venezuela on June 24, have resulted in nearly 2,300 confirmed deaths, with tens of thousands still missing.
