Section of Brighton's West Pier Collapses Amid Storm Austen

A portion of Brighton's historic West Pier has collapsed into the sea, battered by strong winds and waves from Storm Austen. Footage captured during the storm shows one side of the landmark giving way and falling into the water.

The pier, which first opened in 1866, was once a popular attraction, drawing two million visitors at its height. However, its popularity waned after World War II, and it was closed to the public in 1975. Over the years, the structure has continued to deteriorate.

Major sections of the pier fell into the sea during storms in late 2002. The following year, two fires significantly damaged what remained. Subsequent storms have further eroded the iron frame, leaving the pier in an increasingly ruined state and a recognizable symbol of Brighton for many.
