Second Child Dies in Australian Stabbing Attack

A one-year-old child has died from injuries sustained in a stabbing attack in the Blue Mountains, New South Wales Police confirmed Thursday. The baby was among three children allegedly attacked by their mother inside a parked car on Sunday in Valley Heights.

A pair of cyclists discovered the scene and administered first aid. The five-year-old boy died at the scene, while the younger siblings were transported to hospital in critical condition. The mother has been accused of attacking the children, who were strapped in their seats, before attempting to take her own life.

She appeared in Penrith Local Court on Tuesday via videolink and was charged with murder and two counts of attempted murder. Authorities indicated that one of the attempted murder charges would likely be upgraded following the one-year-old's death.

The mother was denied bail and is scheduled to return to court on November 20. The children's father and his extended family have been present at the hospital offering support.

A source close to the family told the Daily Mail that the father was unaware of any issues within the relationship and was blindsided by the news of the alleged attack. The family member stated that the father, who moved to Australia from Kenya in 2013, met his wife after his arrival, and they married in Australia. He reportedly believed his wife was taking their children for a picnic when the incident occurred.

New South Wales Police Deputy Commissioner Peter McKenna described the scene as "barbaric," noting the confronting nature of attacks involving edged weapons, particularly when children are involved.
