Scottish Island with Pier and Lochs Available for £350,000

A remote Scottish island, Hildasay, located off the west coast of Shetland, has been listed for sale at £350,000. The 267-acre property includes its own pier, two freshwater lochs, and a traditional bothy.

Hildasay is accessible only by boat and features an extensive coastline with gently rising ground that reaches approximately 105 feet at its highest point. The island is noted for its variety of birdlife and marine and coastal wildlife. A spokesman for Kelvin Anderson estate agents described the island as a 'truly distinctive property offering privacy and heritage in one of Britain's most remarkable island settings'.

The property's pier serves as the primary landing point. Estate agents highlighted its unspoilt character, offering a sense of escape with open landscapes and uninterrupted sea views. The island's history is closely linked to Shetland's fishing and quarrying heritage.

In 1891, Hildasay was home to around 30 people, with granite quarrying and herring curing being significant local industries. The island's distinctive red-green granite was quarried extensively and transported via a purpose-built railway to the harbor before being shipped internationally, with some reportedly reaching Australia. Remnants of this industrial past, including abandoned granite blocks and traces of the railway, are still visible on the island.

Hildasay, off the west coast of Shetland, is only accessible by boat.

More recently, Hildasay gained attention when it hosted coastline adventurer Chris Lewis during the COVID-19 pandemic. Lewis, who was given special permission to live in the island's sole house with his dog, Jet, documented his experience in a book titled 'Finding Hildasay'.

An entire Scottish island has hit the market for just £350,000.
