Scottish Island Linked to Bonnie Prince Charlie Listed for $1 Million
The Isle of Wiay, offering 970 acres of natural beauty and historical significance, is on the market for the first time with an asking price under £1 million.
The Isle of Wiay, a 970-acre Scottish island steeped in history and once a refuge for Bonnie Prince Charlie, has been put up for sale with an asking price of £995,000. Located off the east coast of Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides, the island features sandy beaches, freshwater lochs, sheltered anchorages, and diverse wildlife.
Wiay holds strong Jacobite associations. According to tradition, Bonnie Prince Charlie sought shelter on the island in 1746 while evading government forces in the aftermath of his defeat at the Battle of Culloden. A cave at the foot of Beinn a' Tuath, known as Prince Charlie's Rest, is believed to have been his hiding place during his escape.
The island was historically home to a small crofting community, and remnants of this past include the ruins of a cottage overlooking Bagh na Murla, a bay on the western shore. While planning consent was previously granted for the cottage's renovation, it has since lapsed. The island currently has no services.
Opportunities for outdoor pursuits are abundant, with freshwater lochs offering fishing potential and sporting rights included in the sale. Stalking is also a prominent activity. The island's remote landscape serves as a habitat for nesting golden eagles and white-tailed sea eagles. Historically, Wiay has supported approximately 200 sheep, benefiting from good grazing on its lower slopes.
The island is sheltered by Benbecula to the west and offers expansive views across the surrounding waters. On clear days, the Cuillin mountains of Skye can be seen on the eastern horizon.
Carl Warden, an estate agent with Bell Ingram, highlighted the property's unique appeal. "The opportunity to own an entire Hebridean island with an asking price below £1 million is certain to capture people's imagination," Warden stated. "Add in Wiay's traditional connection to Bonnie Prince Charlie, its sandy beaches and extraordinary wildlife, and you have a property with a remarkable story to tell. With approximately 970 acres to call your own, it offers privacy and a sense of escape in a spectacular setting."
Wiay is part of the Uists, a group of interconnected islands in the southern Outer Hebrides. The nearest settlement, Balivanich on Benbecula, functions as the commercial and administrative center for the Uists, offering amenities such as shops, healthcare facilities, schools, and an airport with mainland flights.
The broader Uist region is recognized for its white-sand beaches, machair grasslands, freshwater lochs, and abundant marine life, including seals, dolphins, and whales, as well as its strong linguistic and cultural traditions.
Following his decisive defeat at Culloden, Bonnie Prince Charlie remained in hiding as government forces pursued him across the Scottish Highlands and islands. He eventually managed to escape to France, aided by Flora MacDonald, who disguised him as her servant.
