Scotland Becomes Fairytale Destination for One in Four Weddings

Scotland's picturesque landscapes and historic venues are increasingly attracting international couples, with nearly one in four weddings held in the country last year involving non-residents. Official figures from the National Records of Scotland reveal that 6,596 out of 27,191 marriages were between individuals who did not live in Scotland.

These globetrotting couples are drawn to Scotland for its fairytale settings, including castles and stately homes, seeking a unique backdrop for their ceremonies. Chihon Ley Polanco from Chile and Ana-Maria Bucatari from Moldova, for example, chose the Isle of Arran for their August beach wedding. They met as students at the University of Edinburgh and were captivated by the island's scenery, which they described as "the complete scenery of Scotland" and a "magical place."

Americans Hayden and Savannah Aanderud also opted for a Scottish wedding, celebrating at Carlowrie Castle near Edinburgh. They were attracted by Scotland's blend of natural beauty and rich history, noting the scarcity of such historical venues in the United States. The couple appreciated that Scotland offered "lovely countryside, beauty and history" and were "blown away by how beautiful everything was."

Many international guests extend their visits to explore Scotland, incorporating the wedding into a longer holiday or honeymoon. The ease of planning weddings from abroad, thanks to a well-established industry, also contributes to Scotland's appeal.

Gretna Green, a village in Dumfriesshire, emerged as the most popular destination for these international weddings. Of the 6,596 marriages involving non-Scottish residents, 3,492 took place in Gretna Green, making it the site for over half of all destination weddings in Scotland.

Gretna Green accounted for more than half of Scotland’s destination weddings.

Patryk and Angelika Klimorowski, from northwest England, chose Gretna Green for their ceremony. Their connection to Scotland began with shared interests, including the film Loch Ness, and grew through road trips and anniversary celebrations in Edinburgh. They describe Scotland as a "home away from home."
