School Roof Collapse in Pakistan Kills at Least 17 Children
Dozens more injured as structure gives way in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province; building safety concerns persist in the region.
At least 17 children and one teacher died when the roof of a private school collapsed in Peshawar, the capital of Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, on Thursday. More than three dozen others were injured, with some in critical condition, according to emergency services and hospital officials.
Rescue workers were working to free children who remained trapped under the rubble. The incident occurred at a private school, and the exact cause of the collapse is under investigation.
Building collapses are a recurring issue in Pakistan, often attributed to poorly enforced construction standards and the use of substandard materials to reduce costs. In July, a similar incident occurred when the roof of a tutoring center under construction in Lahore collapsed, killing four schoolchildren.
