School Roof Collapse in Pakistan Kills 27 Students and Teacher
More than 30 others injured in Peshawar incident, with six in critical condition.
At least 27 students and one teacher died when the roof of a private school collapsed in Peshawar, Pakistan, on Thursday. More than 30 additional individuals sustained injuries, and six are reported to be in critical condition.
The incident occurred in the northwestern city of Peshawar. All children who were killed or injured were 13 years old or younger, according to a spokesperson for Lady Reading Hospital.
Lady Reading Hospital declared an emergency as medical staff treated the wounded. Emergency services reported that several children remained trapped beneath the rubble as rescue operations commenced.
Residents were among the first to arrive at the scene in a densely populated area of central Peshawar, with rescue workers reaching the site shortly after being alerted. A rescue official described the collapse as a multi-story event, where the roof of an upper floor fell onto the floor below, which subsequently collapsed onto students in their classrooms.
Television footage showed ambulances transporting students from the site, with rescue workers seen pulling casualties from the debris. District emergency officer Iftikhar Khan stated that at least 45 children had been recovered from the rubble. Reports indicated that more children might still be trapped.
The owner of the school has been arrested, Peshawar police chief Saeed Ahmed confirmed, adding that the building was structurally unsound. Building collapses are a recurring issue in Pakistan, often attributed to poor enforcement of construction standards, the use of substandard materials, and the frequent disregard for safety regulations to cut costs. In July, a similar incident involving a roof collapse at a construction site in Lahore resulted in the deaths of four schoolchildren.
