Sanrio Ends Hello Kitty Merchandise Deal After China Backlash Over Spy Drama
The company cited 'elements inconsistent with Sanrio's core values' in terminating its collaboration with the Japanese TV show 'Vivant'.
Sanrio, the company renowned for its iconic Hello Kitty character, has apologized and ended a merchandise partnership with the popular Japanese spy thriller "Vivant" following a significant backlash in China. The decision came after Chinese state media and social media users criticized the show for its portrayal of Chinese agents employing brutal torture tactics.
The controversy extended to Hello Kitty and her friends, who were featured in merchandise designed as characters from the drama. Sanrio stated that it terminated the collaboration after concluding that the show "contained elements inconsistent with Sanrio's core values."
"Since its inception, Sanrio has consistently used its characters to convey values such as care and connection, and remains committed to its corporate philosophy of fostering harmony among all people," the company said in a statement released late Wednesday. "We take the feedback we have received regarding this incident very seriously. Moving forward, we will strengthen our review processes for all future collaborative projects."
Recent tensions between China and Japan have escalated, exacerbated by comments from Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in November regarding Taiwan. Takaichi suggested that Japan would activate its self-defense force if China attacked Taiwan, which triggered a diplomatic dispute. Beijing has since intensified pressure on Tokyo through measures such as restricting rare earth exports, curbing tourism, and recalling pandas.
Sanrio's merchandise collaboration with "Vivant" drew criticism from the state-run Global Times, which argued that the Hello Kitty character "should not dance with Japan's right wing." The publication asserted that Sanrio "stands to lose far more than short-term sales" by associating with "anti-China content," warning that the "trust and emotional bond it has built up over a long time will also suffer."
